Latkes and Late Nights
It takes time for a restaurant to find its stride. After two years in business, Susie’s owner Yael Cantor has turned her delicatessen into a thriving community hub. Known for its packed karaoke nights, reality TV watch parties and makers markets in addition to Jewish comfort food and cocktails, the eatery is celebrating its multifaceted identity with a refreshed space and an all-new late-night menu. Steeped in Tradition
Pinkies up: Stony Point Fashion Park has a new designated teatime. After operating downtown and in Jackson Ward, The Queen’s Library Tea Room owners have reintroduced the venture in a new space bedecked in velvety greens, immersive details and plenty of biscuit-laden tea towers. (Richmond magazine)
Remember That Place?
Drive down Patterson Avenue, peek into an unassuming strip mall, and you’ll find Pegasus, a family-run Greek-Italian eatery that has remained practically — and proudly — unchanged for nearly 30 years. In our latest ode to local restaurants with longevity, writer Genevelyn Steele takes us into the family-owned business and shares its tale of endurance. (Richmond magazine)
Prix Fixe Party
Richmond Restaurant Week — a twice-yearly opportunity to show a little extra love for the city’s dining spots and benefit local hunger-relief charity Feed More — returns Oct. 19-25. Regulars know the drill: Make those resos before places including Alewlife, Pinky’s and Stock are booked up. First-timer? RRW is the ideal time to try a new eatery on a budget (each restaurant offers a prix fixe menu) for a good cause.

Baltik’s 2.0: When Baltik’s Bagel owner Yero Rudzinskas announced last month that he had taken over the iconic Adobe-style building in Union Hill, formerly home to Alamo BBQ, he was coy about his next move for the space. Well, it turns out the former chef and current baker is going to open a second location of his bagel shop. Stay tuned for more details, including the projected opening date next month. Day of the Dead: Every year, Carytown watering hole The Jasper and sibling bar The Emerald Lounge in Union Hill celebrate the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, transforming the spaces with glowing marigolds, papel picado (perforated paper) banners and sugar skulls and rewriting their menus to showcase Mexican spirits and snacks. The fun kicks off Oct. 21.
Get Baked: When last we spoke with the owners of the now-shuttered Charlotte’s Deli, they were hyping the eatery’s bread program. Fast-forward to this weekend, and chefs and spouses Nikki and Paul Polk are popping up at Ruby’s Scoops on Oct. 17 with a bake sale. The menu includes a swath of globally influenced treats, including Appalachian pepperoni rolls, Spanish pan de cristal, Japanese shio pan with cinnasugar and vegetable curry buns.
Final Resting Pizza: To assist in the celebrations this spooky season, self-proclaimed pizza ambassador (and Richmond magazine writer) Lauren Vincelli is taking local pie lovers on a graveyard adventure. On Nov. 1, she’ll lead The Richmond Pizza History Cemetery Tour, a walking excursion through Mount Calvary Cemetery that features tales of the city’s first pizza makers — and plenty of slices.
Lucky Strike: EAT Restaurant Partners finally opened its brand-new outpost of Lucky AF, two years in the making, on the ground floor of the Evelyn development in Forest Hill this week. The restaurant is lively and modern, with a dining room decked out in themed decor (including waving lucky cats watching over the sushi bar and a locally designed dragon and phoenix neon light fixture) and a spacious patio, along with sushi rolls and sashimi from head chef Hai Truong, cocktails and sake.
Panda-monium: Auntie Tina’s Taiwanese bentos, char siu- and tater tot-stuffed breakfast burritos, slices made in collaboration with Zorch Pizza, and thoughtfully sourced pour-overs will feature at the Museum District’s longstanding China Panda restaurant Oct. 16-19. The Sons of China Panda, a pop-up series led by owner Tina Chan’s children, returns for the first time since May with its first-ever Late-Autumn Fest.
Spike It: Ever experienced Bierstacheln, where a heated metal rod is plunged into a cold one? At Ardent Craft Ales’ Smolder: Smoked Beer & Food Festival Oct. 17, the centuries-old German tradition comes alive. Also on the itinerary: the debut of a smoked Helles lager, along with eats from Belmont Butchery, Eazzy Burger and On the Grill RVA and treats from Sunday Picnic.
Welcome Home: Through her business VegTable, Kathryn Schmitz makes tomato jam; take-and-bake gougères (cheese puffs); and just about any condiment that can take your snack, sandwich or dish up a notch. Next week marks her first event as Chef in Residence at the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU’s Abby Moore Cafe, beginning Oct. 22 with a Fall Abundance lunch featuring seasonal soups, toasts, salads and sweets.
