Terror suspect arrested in Montreal was in Canada illegally: RCMP

A man arrested in Montreal after he allegedly planned a terrorist attack on behalf of the Islamic State was in the country illegally, according to police.

Louay Angoud “has no legal status in Canada,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told The Gazette.

Angoud was arrested Wednesday at Place Ville Marie by the RCMP and faces three terrorism charges in relation to a planned attack with a chemical weapon.

While the RCMP confirmed Friday that Angoud had been arrested at the downtown office tower complex, which also has retail stores and restaurants, but police wouldn’t say what brought Angoud to Montreal.

Police have identified the 24-year-old as a resident of Quebec City and court documents list his residence as an address in the provincial capital.

Police and prosecutors allege he “intended to carry out at least one attack on behalf of the Islamic State” and that he “communicated online with members of a terrorist group and gathered information to build a chemical weapon that could be used to poison Canadian citizens.”

The RCMP said Thursday he was not in possession of the substances at the time of his arrest and there was no imminent danger to the public.

He is currently detained and scheduled to appear in court again on Monday.

Police say he has no criminal record.
