6 FDA food recalls in August that impact Wisconsinites

Though it’s easy to reach for your favorite snacks in the grocery store without thinking twice, food items in the U.S. are recalled several times a week for everything from undeclared allergens to listeria contamination.

In August, the Food and Drug Administration recalled dozens of products over public safety concerns — including some that were sold in Wisconsin stores.

Here are all the food items the FDA recalled this month and what steps to take in case you have any of them in your kitchen.

Which food items sold in Wisconsin has the FDA recalled? 

Several of the food items recalled in August were sold in Wisconsin. Here’s which products you should check your shelves for:

• Boar’s Head and Old Country Deli Meats: A variety of deli meats, including ham, salami, kielbasa and liverwurst, were recalled due to listeria contamination. As of Wednesday, the outbreak had spread to 18 states, including at least one case in Wisconsin.
• Meijer Dunking Cookies Chocolate Chip: Meijer, a Midwestern supermarket chain, recalled one of its chocolate chip cookie brands due to undeclared milk in the ingredients, which could pose a risk to people with milk allergies. The product was sold in Meijer stores throughout Wisconsin, including in Wauwatosa, Oak Creek and Greenfield.
• Popsicle Jolly Rancher Frozen Confection Pop: Popsicle is recalling about 137,000 cases of its Jolly Rancher popsicles, distributed throughout the U.S., because the products have an undeclared milk allergen. The only impact products are single-serve Jolly Rancher popsicles, which are typically sold from ice cream trucks, concession stands and grab-and-go freezers.
• Montreal Fudge: Authentik Fudge, a Canada-based company, is recalling 840 units of its “Montreal Fudge” because of potential mold growth contamination. The product, a chocolate fudge with nuts, was sold in Marshalls and TJ Maxx stores throughout the U.S., including Marshalls stores in Wisconsin.
• Bliss Tree Butter Snacks: Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar Overseas, a New Jersey-based company, is recalling one of its snacks due to undeclared milk and sesame seed allergens. Though it’s unclear which Wisconsin stores the products were sold in, the snacks were “distributed nationwide” via retail stores and Amazon orders, according to the FDA.
• Perdue Chicken Tenders: Perdue Foods, based in Georgia, has recalled more than 167,00 pounds of its frozen, ready-to-eat chicken breast nugget and tender products because they may be contaminated with metal, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The products were sold in retail locations nationwide.
